About Shepherds Camp Camp History Shepherds Camp began over 45 years ago when Leo Spencer and Ron & Miriam Tenney had a vision of creating a special place for children with special needs. The Tenneys and Leo Spencer, all parents of children with special needs, wanted to start a program so children with developmental disabilities could have a place to explore, play, and be cared for in a Christian environment at a summer camp. This vision, starting with one week of summer camp for 15 campers, was the beginning of Shepherds Camp. Shepherds has grown into a place that teenagers and adults with developmental disabilities can come to experience the love of God and enjoy a week or two of camp. In the last 40 years, hundreds of people with disabilities have come to discover what a truly special place camp is. Why We Exist The mission of Shepherds Camp is “to meet the spiritual and recreational needs of people with developmental disabilities” and to minister to the many care providers and families by providing a time of respite.
